Catbird (RealAudio sample; click here to download RealPlayer)
The catbird is common backyard bird that inhabits brushy thickets. More often heard than seen, catbirds can be recognized by their catlike mew-calls and their high-pitched squeaky songs. The male's song is a long-continued series of variable phrases separated by brief pauses. Each phrase is almost always different from the one that precedes it, with some being musical in effect and others harsh and discordant.
