Eastern Towhee

Teach me half the gladness, that thy brain must know,
such harmonious madness, from my lips would flow . . .

Percy Bysshe Shelley

Eastern Towhee (RealAudio sample; click here to download RealPlayer)

The towhee is a common inhabitant of overgrown fields and other brushy areas. The male's variable song ends with a high trill and usually sounds like the phrase "drink, your teeeeeeee" (shortened versions and more extreme variations occur). The common call of the towhee is a rising "chuweee" or "toe-wheee." Most towhees have red eyes, but one Florida race sports white eyes (pictured above).
