Eastern Narrowmouth Toad Gastrophryne carolinensis

Eastern Narrowmouth Toad (RealAudio sound sample)

The male's advertisement call is a buzzy, nasal "waaaaaaaa!", lasting about one to several seconds. Sounds like call of Fowler's Toad, but is shorter in duration, more buzzy, and sometimes preceded by a soft squeak or peep. Widespread throughout the southeast. May be heard calling from shallow pools from spring to autumn, especially after heavy rains.
