by Lang Elliott, NatureSound Studio

Experience the sounds of 100 northwoods species of frogs, mammals, insects, and birds with this unique 60-minute audio guide and accompanying 36-page booklet. Each species is identified by name on the audio, followed by superb examples of its calls. The companion booklet provides written descriptions of each species' sounds along with habitat information and interesting facts.

Northwoods is defined as the transitional area where northern hardwood forest gradually gives way to the boreal evergreen forest. In the United States, this region stretches from Maine to Minnesota and includes lake country as well as high mountains, open bogs, upland meadows, and dense forest. In Canada, the northwoods stretches from Manitoba to the Maritime Provinces.

American Beaver (RealAudio segment from guide + booklet text)

Habitat: Dams up small streams to create optimal swampland habitat. Also frequents lakes and ponds.

Voice: An alarmed beaver will slap its flat tail against the water before diving, alerting other beaver to danger. Beaver produce moaning sounds which can be heard coming from dens or open water at night. When eating bark, raspy chewing sounds are made that can be heard a hundred feet away.
